Yoga/University

a new semester at university is upon us! I am already a busy, busy bee just after the first two days. In case you forgot (or did i even mention it? i’m not sure and too lazy to look back), i am a graphic design major with an emphasis in illustration. pretty cool stuff. also pretty time consuming and expensive stuff. between textbooks, supplies, paper, sketchbooks, and all things needed for art making (which is a lot) i have spent tons and tons of money, and i feel like i don’t even have half the things i need yet.

but this semester already proves to be an interesting one! I am signed up for Typography, 20th Century Art History, Sculpture I, an online psychology class, and “portfolio review”, which is basically an assessment of all the art you have created thus far in your college career, judged by the faculty and dean of the college of fine arts.

so, yes. busy.

I am very excited for this semester though. i get to take one of the most demanding graphic design courses at my university (typography) with an excellent professor who is known for kicking some serious butt. i get to learn to WELD and use a fucking LASER to cut STEEL in sculpture. i get really excited about that. i feel like a major badass in that class. I have a new professor for art history who is infinitely kinder and more engaging than my previous art history professor for 201 and 202. everything seems like it’s going super awesomely so far!

it’s also a strange semester though. i obviously don’t want to get into my personal drama here, but i had a sort of falling out with a couple very close friends last semester, and it’s very awkward seeing them in class again. i went into this semester feeling very nervous because of this. they were literally two of my closest friends, and now we haven’t spoken in months. things have been said, and feeling have been hurt, and unfortunately a really close relationship has been lost.

so now i feel like i’m totally starting over. fresh start. it’s nice but also very scary.

okay, i’ve been rambling, and not even the rambling you want to hear. back to yoga.

I received the schedule for group fitness classes at my university rec center! unfortunately, all yoga classes now require payment (there are certain free classes, and yoga used to be one of them), but there is a “yoga flow” class every tuesday and it’s only $16 for the entire semester! definitely within my small budget! i will be attending that weekly starting next week!

i went to the rec center to get in some cardio with a friends today after sculpture class. i was on the elliptical for 20 minutes, and also happened to be right next to my sculpture professor, which was funny. i did some interval running around the track, some weight lifting, and then 20 minutes on the rowing machine (my favorite! so fun!). i am definitely feeling it already! my thighs, calves, and shoulders are sore. my friend and i plan to continue to this schedule of working out after sculpture every tuesday and thursday, since it’s over at 2pm, and that’s our last class for the day.

something i noticed today was a huge improvement in my flexibility. let me get something off my chest, i AM NOT a flexible person. it’s comical, really. i usually have a hard time just touching my toes, but today it was no problem. even my friend was impressed by my new found limberness. also i can see a real difference in my balance and breathing while running. i usually struggle with running a lot. not my strongest point, but today i ran farther than i had in a long time, and i think that’s because i have this new found control over my breathing. what a wonderful day it has been!

so there’s an update! i’m feeling very refreshed and excited about this new time in my life! i can already tell this semester is going to be amazing, and i can’t wait to see and experience all the wonderful things it brings!

Missing In Action

So sorry for the lack of postings lately, guys! A lot has been happening, I’ve been preparing for the new fall semester (which starts tomorrow! eek!), working A LOT, and just enjoying these final and fleeting moments of summer!

I have been continuing with yoga, improving a little more every day, and i plan on starting some classes at a place called Studio 8 downtown. Super disappointed though, because their only bikram yoga class is mondays at 5:15, exactly when my 20th Century Art History class starts. But they do have beginning yoga classes tuesday and thursday at 6:00 and that fits perfectly into my busy schedule! It’s $8 per class, which might be a little much to do every single week, but i’m excited to get in a proper studio with an instructor who can help me, guide me into the correct forms, and give advice.

I got Tara Stiles’ Slim Calm Sexy Yoga book in the mail a few days ago! it’s a wonderful book with lots of advice and words of wisdom, and so far it has been a big help!

I’m gonna try and get back to regularly updating, even though i have a brand new semester filled with school work ahead of me. After all, one of my reasons for starting yoga was to have a stress relief outlet during school, so I’ll keep you all updated on how that goes! Hope everyone is doing well and didn’t miss me too much ;)
